Mobility and Metro Rail, Hand-in-Hand

Increasing consumption of fuel, the resulting pollution and inefficient spread of urban regions due to incessant expansion of private motorized transport make some of the compelling reasons for prioritization of public transport in one of the rapidly growing cities of the world like Hyderabad.

Investments in public transport have now become imperative. This fits in tune with the recently announced Metro Railway Policy by India’s Urban Development Ministry that encourages cities having a population of more two million populations towards planning and implementation of high speed metro rail systems which is now seen as a welcome initiative. Since larger cities are expected for accommodating most of the burgeoning urbanizing populations in future, the time has come to plan for long-term growth and mobility.

The metro rail, which takes years of groundwork for planning and implementation, plays a significant role for shaping the future. The successful progress of Hyderabad Metro in a record time has now strengthened the example of how metro can be an important option for urban transportation and the project is now facing aggressive phase of implementation.  The usefulness of a metro rail depends on how this becomes integrated with the functional and spatial planning of a city like Hyderabad. Urban regions witness high development close to the metro rail corridors leveraging the advantage of the high-capacity mass rapid transit system that could compensate for lopsided urban growth. The intense building activity across the main corridors, which can also enhance ridership during peak hours in a peak direction, could usher the metro rail network as an economically sustainable option.

In order for the metro rail to function well, there is a good feeder bus network for mobility, connecting the pedestrian paths including the feature of seamless modal transfer. It is important for expanding transport options, and along with comprehensive development, that accompanies a Metro rail for a city like Hyderabad, mobility within the city could be efficient and convenient.

Hyderabad Metro Rail, an Efficient Transit System of the Future

For those who travel during rush hours in Hyderabad, maybe on an overcrowded bus while thousands of vehicles sound horns in a loud cacophony understand why the city needs an improvement in its public transport facilities on a priority basis. A city, with the size of Hyderabad rightly deserves a rail-based rapid transport system. This gap is now being filled with the Hyderabad Metro Rail.

Public transport is an important part of urban infrastructure and especially for a megacity like Hyderabad with its current population reaching 9 million, and projected to touch 13 million by 2025. Every year around 50,000 new vehicles are being added in Hyderabad and this is also expected to grow exponentially every year adding more to traffic chaos in the already congested roads of Hyderabad. During rush hours, the average speed on Hyderabad’s main thoroughfares does not exceed 15 to 20 km per hour. Apart from loss of valuable time, the noise pollution including the danger of accidents for pedestrians and heavy air pollution are something that does not augur well for a city, which has its goals set high for the future.

In order improve the overall quality of life; a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) is the need of the hour in Hyderabad in order for providing an efficient, safe and reliable public transport. The first phase involves erection of an elevated rail system of 72 km length that connects different parts of Hyderabad and is also expected to significantly reduce the journey times.

A project of the scale of Hyderabad Metro Rail is an utmost necessity for the city and today the project is moving ahead at an impressive pace, creating new records unheard for any PPP project for a Metro and the first phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail is all set to be operational by 2017. The Metro Rail Project is a landmark project, bound to redefine the concept of mobility in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.  Efficient Transit is a vital link in ensuring the sustainability of urban regions as engines of vibrant economic growth. Mass Transit solutions require huge investments and Larsen & Toubro Limited commanding a rich experience in the construction of Metro, Railways, and Mono Rail Systems in different parts of the world is the company that is today propelling the development of Hyderabad Metro, laying the groundwork for an efficient transit system for the mega city.

Metro, the perfect impetus for all-round development!

Hyderabad Metro is envisaged for three corridors of Hyderabad and one of them is the Falaknuma- Jubilee Bus station corridor. The Hyderabad Metro Rail project would serve as right impetus for rejuvenating commercial establishments in older parts of the city, which have missed the growth story, which has happened in other parts of Hyderabad.

As cities start expanding, the older parts experience sluggish growth as people have a tendency to move away from them. The only manner in which older establishments can be saved is to bring consumers back to them by offering them better transportation and Hyderabad Metro Rail project is now considered as a best way to ensure this renewed connectivity.

The project has provisions for Transit Oriented Development that would develop commercial complexes and establishments, where consumers can quickly and easily access the shops and establishments which were otherwise not that easily accessible at convenient locations. The Metro Rail would usher various other benefits for the city by means of providing avenues for comprehensively redesigning the city.

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited is focusing on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) as part of the project giving a fillip to development activities along the corridors envisaged.

Hyderabad Metro dedicates itself to the boosting Brand Hyderabad's journey, which calls for focusing all its resources for building and strengthening the image of Hyderabad.Property rates in the city are expected to be shoot up by 20-30 per cent after the metro commences and hence, investing in the city’s under developed eastern localities like Uppal and LB Nagar are expected to get maximum returns, according to industry pundits. The inception of the metro project would have a positive impact on the entire city.
