Hyderabad Metro Rail: Urbanity, Development and Infrastructure

What separates urban life from semi-urban and rural life is the capacity of the urban to be able to integrate two diametric opposite spaces within one. The urbaneness of a city in a nation like India is often marked by the continuous interplay of dialectical relations in terms of abundance/lack, developed/under-developed, modern/traditional and a lot more. Hence, public policy on infrastructure development needs to be rightly planned so as to be able to cater to this diversity.

While a major focus must be laid on infrastructure development in business areas within a city-scape for an improved economic base; a simultaneous focus must also be placed on a broader developmental agenda for the not so well-to-do areas of the city as well. In other words, while a city’s infrastructure needs to be able to cater to the city’s capital yielding population, it should simultaneously benefit the hard-working ordinary man-power who moulds the city everyday into what it is.  At a time when modernity and technology pierces through the heart of the urban-scape, the cultural and the traditional heritages re-create the past of the city to give it its unique identity.

L&T Metro rail project boasts of having its foundations in an organization which has a history of having transformed cities across India, keeping in mind the paradigm shifts of the contemporary world. A company of global proportions, the group started in Bombay in 1938 headed by two visionary Danish engineers. With over three quarters of experience and research into Indian conditions, L&T Metro project has been able to keep up the legacy with ample research and carefully engineered infrastructure design as per the needs of the city.

The L&T Hyderabad Metro rail project is one which is being carefully designed with a vision in mind. The vision is “To transform the lives of people of Hyderabad through best ‘in-class’ mobility, connecting and creating vibrant urban spaces.”  A ‘Transit+’ model metro which will connect to all major transportation hubs across the city. Starting from major bus-stands to MMTS stations, the metro is to interlace all of the city’s transportation system.

Hyderabad: A city of regal charms, a city with a massive potential IT hub, a city of live palatable tastes. Yet Hyderabad is also a city of major disparities. While certain areas have seen extreme development in terms of infrastructure, certain others remain aloof from the developmental agenda. A major reason for this is also the inaccessibility quotient of these areas. An essential marker for a good developmental model is in development being homogenized at least in terms of accessibility and infrastructure. The idea behind the Hyderabad metro rail project is towards such a developmental model, one that can cater to the diversity of its population. An objective that will try and promote transit oriented development allowing for the major transits to become potential business centers with the development of the railway.

This project aims to transform the urban-scape of Hyderabad into a vivid and lively space. A space which by virtue of its infrastructural quality promotes a developmental agenda. An agenda that is turned looks towards addressing the questions of diversity.
